<p>Do you remember the days when something as simple as a toy was that important to you? Sometimes we forget that we don&#8217;t have to buy kids an expensive electronic or video game.  Maybe it is because we are a little out of touch with what is &#8220;cool&#8221; to a child or maybe all those advertisements for the next big thing sway our decisions more than we realize.  But, as this e-mail exchange between my boyfriend, Alex, and his nephew, &#8220;O&#8221;, will show &#8211; a toy isn&#8217;t necessarily just a toy&#8230;</p>

<p><em><strong>Do you remember the days when something as simple as a toy was that important to you?</strong></em><em> Sometimes we forget that we don&#8217;t have to buy kids an expensive electronic or video game.  Maybe it is because we are a little out of touch with what is &#8220;cool&#8221; to a child or maybe all those advertisements for the next big thing sway our decisions more than we realize.  But, as this e-mail exchange between my boyfriend, Alex, and his nephew, &#8220;O&#8221;, will show &#8211; a toy isn&#8217;t necessarily just a toy&#8230;</em></p>
<p>Not long ago, I was inspired to write a <strong><a title="Read my earlier post about Transformers!" href="http://www.thegiftdetective.com/blog/archives/4683" target="_blank">Toy Tuesday post about Transformers</a></strong> because Alex&#8217;s nephew (I&#8217;ll refer to him as &#8220;O&#8221; throughout the remainder of the post) <strong>loves <a title="Investigate Transformers!" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26search-alias%3Dtoys-and-games%26ref_%3Dbl%5Fsr%5Ftoys-and-games%26field-brandtextbin%3DTransformers&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957" target="_blank">Transformers</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="https://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong>.</p>
<p>The search for the perfect Transformer for &#8220;O&#8221; began with an e-mail from him to his Uncle one day in April&#8230;</p>
<blockquote><p>Dear Alex:</p>
<p>I was hoping you could come here sometime in the summer. And I hope you can bring some of your Transformers along. I don&#8217;t care which Transformers you bring along, I just care if you bring some. I am considering that you are my buddy.</p>
<p>Love, &#8220;O&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Alex, of course, sent a reply to his buddy!</p>
<blockquote><p>Hi &#8220;O&#8221;,</p>
<p>It&#8217;s nice to hear from you.  I&#8217;m sorry to take a long time in answering.  I have been hoping to be able to tell you that I would be able to come and visit with you this summer, but right now it is not looking like I will be able to.  I hope you are having a nice time in California, and that you are going to have a very fun summer.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to send you a Transformer for you to play with, so you can know I&#8217;m thinking of you.  I hope you like it!</p>
<p>Love,</p>
<p>Alex</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>This next letter from &#8220;O&#8221; to Alex is my favorite because it just goes to show how much a simple toy means to a kid! </strong><em>(note that we live in Boston, MA and &#8220;O&#8221; lives in CA!)</em></p>
<blockquote><p>Dear Alex:</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t send us the Transformer we will go to your place so you can give me the Transformer.</p>
<p>When are you sending the Transformer? I want to know when you are sending it so I know when I get it.</p>
<p>How are you doing today?</p>
<p>What kind of Transformer are you going to give me, an Autobot or a Decepticon?</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t wait until I get it.</p>
<p>Your friend,</p>
<p>&#8220;O&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><center><strong>Alex sent this Transformer:</strong></center><br />
<center><img class="size-full wp-image-4690" title="Transformers - Bludgeon" src="http://www.thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Transformers-Bludgeon.jpg" alt="" width="126" height="160"></center><br />
<br />
and he received a thank you e-mail <em>(which I don&#8217;t have a copy of yet, but will update the post if I get it)</em> and now he has one very happy nephew!</p>
<p><strong>Case closed. </strong></p>

He always wants &#8220;Uncle Alex&#8221; to play with him or help him transform them or play with him some more. At the end of the trip, he is always trying to get Uncle Alex to give him a Transformer <em>(or five!)</em> and he sometimes gets to take one home on the plane with him but most of them stay here as the reserves for him to play with on his visits to New England.</p>
<p>Alex did a great job picking out this gift and making sure that he picked out one his nephew is sure to love, <a title="Investigate Bludgeon, awesome Transformer!" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ZQ4OTU?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002ZQ4OTU" target="_blank"><strong>Bludgeon</strong></a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002ZQ4OTU" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /> <em>($21.60)</em>. He not only picked out something that his nephew would love, but he also made sure that it was an okay choice with his brother and his sister-in-law. Yes, my man is a savvy gift gift giver. He sent an e-mail out making sure that it wasn&#8217;t considered too violent a toy, too much work for them <em>(since they will have to help transform it at first)</em> and even sent them a<strong> <a title="Investigate a video review about Bludgeon!" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVVy_E44jsg" target="_blank">link to a video of how to transform it</a></strong> in case they, or his nephew, had trouble with the instructions.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Maybe a Transformer doesn&#8217;t seem like a very personalized gift when you are in the toy aisle at the store or shopping online, but if a gift like that is going to please your young recipient, then it certainly is a personalized gift because you are choosing with care! </strong></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Alex personalized this gift further by having it sent directly to his nephew</strong>, because he knows kids love getting mail addressed to them! It is a small touch, but on that definitely won&#8217;t go unnoticed by the young recipient. It is these little things that make all the difference in gift giving, no matter what the gift.</p>
<p><strong>Happy gifting! </strong></p>

<p>If they love to sail you can make a thank you card with a <strong><a href="http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/06/diy-project-ericas-nautical-cards-and-picks.html">nautical theme</a></strong> or give them their favorite alcoholic beverage (you <em>were</em> paying attention, right?) and re-label it (a photo from your stay, <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautical_flags">saying &#8220;thank you&#8221; in code with nautical flags</a></strong>, print a nice pic off the internet of a sailboat, etc.) and <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailing#Knots">tie a sailing knot</a></strong> around the top of the bottle. See how something as simple as a bottle of wine can be turned into a more personalized gift? Without a lot of fuss or money either! <strong>Combine their passions with a gift and you have something personalized that they will enjoy! </strong></p>
<p>A child&#8217;s birthday? What do they love? Bugs, dinosaurs, Barbie, Harry Potter, video games?</p>
<p>Well, let&#8217;s pick the bug lover&#8230;do they love to examine, find, learn? Consider their age and what they have access to. You don&#8217;t want to give an butterfly net to a child who lives in a city apartment complex but an insect habitat like a <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000ISC5?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00000ISC5">butterfly garden</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00000ISC5" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong> or <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000099Z8H?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000099Z8H">ladybug habitat</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000099Z8H" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong>. A child who has access to outdoor spaces might like a <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000066HU1?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000066HU1">Creature Peeper</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000066HU1" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong>. A younger child might love a<strong> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Q60UYE?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000Q60UYE">stuffed animal</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000Q60UYE" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /> </strong>and an older child might like <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789493926?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0789493926">books</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0789493926" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong> on the subject.</p>
<p>Happy gifting!</p>

Not anything I want to let my readers know about I thought&#8230;then I found this set &#8211; yes, it&#8217;s more expensive than the others but according to reviews, much more durable. In fact, this game has totally one me over and I&#8217;m going to be buying it, along with <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y133N6?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000Y133N6">extra sets of balls</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000Y133N6" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong> so that we can all play together. If it turns out to be as fun as I imagine, we may have to get some of the <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PHAX1Y?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000PHAX1Y">indoor balls</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000PHAX1Y" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong> too. After we play the game some I&#8217;ll do a follow up post to let you know if it is really Gift Detective APPROVED!<br />
<center><a href="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/bullseye-washers.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1567" title="bullseye-washers" src="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/bullseye-washers.jpg" alt="" width="160" height="160" /></a><br />

This game is similar to horseshoes in that it is a target game, but you are throwing washers instead. Great game that allows everyone to play, even the younger kids, because the washers are lighter and will allow them to learn some hand-eye coordination without having to heave a heavy horseshoe. This game packs up nicely so that you can bring it to the BBQ, park or camping trip and play with your family and friends.<br />
<center><a href="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/aerobie-pro-flying-disc.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-632" title="aerobie-pro-flying-disc" src="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/aerobie-pro-flying-disc.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="250" /></a><br />

I&#8217;ve blogged about this gift before and I&#8217;ll probably blog about it again. Such simplicity and such fun!!! This disc FLIES with the lightest of throws and flies well. One thing to bring to the park and everyone can participate and have fun! This gift is a gift that has a ton of value and appeal that you won&#8217;t get tired of playing with. This disc gets five stars in all the reviews I&#8217;ve ever read about it and there is a reason!<br />

I love the <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GK7GEM?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000GK7GEM">Aerobie Flying Ring</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000GK7GEM" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong> so much that I have to try their boomerang. So, a follow up will be posted to let you know about my experience with it but, honestly, after being so impressed with the disc I have no doubt that the boomerang will be a big hit with us as well.<br />
<center><a href="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/trac-ball.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1569" title="trac-ball" src="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/trac-ball.jpg" alt="" width="160" height="77" /></a><br />
<strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00003CYPK?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00003CYPK">Trac Ball Racket Game</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00003CYPK" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong></center><br />
Remember playing with this as a kid? The set we had when I was young was something I loved to play with. I went from feeling uncoordinated to feeling like I had great hand-eye coordination. It makes it fun for children and adults to play because both can participate and enjoy themselves &#8211; key to a day of family fun!<br />
<center><a href="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/speedminton-set.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1571" title="speedminton-set" src="http://thegiftdetective.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/speedminton-set.jpg" alt="" width="160" height="79" /></a><br />
<strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AEGKLO?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000AEGKLO">Pro Performance Speedminton Fun Set</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000AEGKLO" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong></center><br />
I&#8217;m so excited to be blogging about all of these great outdoor toys! Badminton is one of those games that I love but, unless you have the space to keep a net set up, it is more often more work than it is worth because you lose people&#8217;s interest before you get to the fun part. Not so with Speedminton! You can play anywhere and can play different versions of the game depending on the group of people so that it is really customizable and everyone gets to have fun. They have sets <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AEGKLO?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000AEGKLO">for two</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000AEGKLO" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong> <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F51P3A?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001F51P3A">or four</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001F51P3A" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></strong> so that there are many options for people to play. They also have an accessory which allows you to define your <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LG7UEQ?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwthegiftdet-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B001LG7UEQ">court</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwthegiftdet-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B001LG7UEQ" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></strong>. </p>
<p>Who do outdoor games make good gifts for? Really, just about anybody as long as they enjoy being outside! Men, women, young and old, there are games for everyone. Make sure that if you aren&#8217;t getting this gift for someone in your family that you know your recipient well enough to pick an outdoor game that they would have interest in. Smaller, less expensive gifts (like the Aerobie Flying Ring) make really great presents even for the person you don&#8217;t know too well because there are no rules to learn, nothing to set up &#8211; you can begin enjoying it right away. A lot of these games are family or party oriented so if you want a really awesome thank you gift for the friends that let you stay at their beach house or your buddies that are always inviting you over for a cookout &#8211; games like these are a great gift because they fit the vibe &#8211; relaxed atmospheres to have fun and enjoy &#8211; what better way to thank someone than enhancing their collection of games? These would also make great birthday, graduation or housewarming gifts for the summer babies or your friends that have a new backyard when they move.</p>
<p>When not to give a gift like this &#8211; winter! Don&#8217;t give something to someone that they have to wait months and months to use. Unless you live in a year-round warm climate, only give this gift during the nicer months of the year.</p>
<p>If you are getting these gifts to enjoy with your family and friends I hope that they bring you lots of pleasure!!! Spending time playing with those we love is one of the best gifts of all.</p>
<p>Happy gifting!</p>
